The world is divided into four nations -- the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation and the Air Nomads -- each represented by a natural element for which the nation is named. Benders have the ability to control and manipulate the element from their nation. Only the Avatar is the master of all four elements. The ruthless Fire Nation wants to conquer the world but the only bender who has enough power, the Avatar, has disappeared ... until now. His tribe soon discovers that Aang is the long-lost Avatar. Now Katara and Sokka must safeguard Aang on his journey to master all four elements and save the world from the Fire Nation. Can he do it on time?
When you pass the first layer of fun animation and jokes, we can see the four nations each represent a specific aspect of Asian culture: the Fire Nation represents imperial Japan, the Earth Kingdom represents Communist China, the Northern and Southern Water Tribes represent indigenous people, and the Air Nomads represent the Buddhist monks and those of Tibetan heritage. The reason I think the creators of ATLA decided to put such a heavy topic in a made-for-kids television show is the famous phrase “history tends to repeat itself.” By putting these historical events in a negative light, it teaches children from a young age that governments who use fear as a tool of oppression are capable of becoming corrupt and dangerous.
The Fire Nation is one of the world's four nations and five sovereign states. It is an absolute monarchy led by the Fire Lord and home to most firebenders. Geographically, the nation is located along the planet's equator in the western hemisphere and is composed of several islands, named the Fire Islands.
The Water Tribe is one of the original four nations and its citizens primarily inhabit the northern and southernmost regions of the globe, near both poles. It is also a collective term for the nation of people who practice the art of waterbending.
The Air Nomads were a peaceful race who were wiped out by the Fire Nation. They lived in large temples and travelled the world on flying bison. They were the most spiritual of all the cultures and lived in harmony with nature. They were also fun-loving and had a strong sense of humour.
The Earth Kingdom is one of the world's four nations. Spanning an entire continent as well as several subsidiary islands, it is the largest and most populated sovereignty in the world and encompasses much of the eastern hemisphere. The kingdom operates as a monarchy under the rule of a king or queen.
